Microsoft announces that it will open a cloud region in Taiwan, the first cloud datacentre in the country and the largest investment by Microsoft in Taiwan worth US$10.48 billion.
Microsoft operates 66 cloud regions worldwide and with the establishment of the datacentre in Taiwan, this marks a major step in developing Taiwan into a regional hub for advanced cloud software and hardware infrastructure capable of supporting artificial intelligence, the internet of things and edge computing applications. Leading Taiwanese companies TSMC, Acer, ASUS and major telecoms including Chunghwa and Taiwan Mobile are set to benefit as the collaboration with Microsoft will help drive the digital transformation of Taiwan’s industries utilising the latest AI and IoT technologies whilst meeting stringent cybersecurity standards.
By 2024, Microsoft will also significantly invest in the training of 200,000 digital professionals, including reskilling those in the non-profit sector as well as providing skills acquisition programs for youth, startups, students, businesses & entrepreneurs. The plan will greatly strengthen Taiwan’s technological capabilities whilst creating more than 30,000 job opportunities and injecting US$10.48 billion into the economy.
